I previously [posted here](https://www.reddit.com/r/dumbclub/comments/1w09xyq/i_rewrote_the_mobile_xray_client_core_in_rust/) about rewriting the mobile Xray client core in Rust after running into iOS memory limits. Both the core and mobile SDK are now at **0.9.0**, so I wanted to share what’s changed.\n\nThe protocol list has grown quite a bit. Since that post, I’ve added **VMess AEAD, Trojan, Shadowsocks 2022 and classic AEAD, Hysteria 2, WireGuard, and SOCKS5/HTTP proxy outbounds**. There’s also VLESS encryption, VLESS Mux, Salamander, and port hopping for Hysteria 2 and XHTTP over HTTP/3.\n\nThe SDK now has profile import, live traffic counters, connection management, and connectivity checks. Apple support also extends to macOS and tvOS.\n\nA few contributors have also joined the project, and xray-rust is now being used in real apps beyond my own. Thanks to everyone who’s contributed, tested it, or taken the time to report a bug.\n\nA lot of the work was tracking down things that only break under actual traffic: downloads stopping when an app reads too slowly, uploads stalling on TCP window updates, and buffers growing when the connection can’t keep up. I’d reproduce the problem, compare the behavior with Xray-core, fix it, and add a regression test.\n\nOne example: eight XHTTP uploads through TUN on a slow outbound were using around **63 MiB** with the mobile profile. After fixing how much data each flow could queue, that dropped to about **33 MiB**, with the same throughput.\n\nTesting has expanded too: real Xray-core and sing-box servers, fuzzing, simulated latency and packet loss, repeated starts and stops, and physical iPhone and Android devices. On iPhone, I also tested switching between Wi-Fi and cellular and locking the phone while traffic was running.\n\nThe [updated benchmarks](https://github.com/aimalygin/xray-rust/blob/main/docs/benchmarks/results/2026-10-30-v26.10.21-three-engine/README.md), run on an Apple M6 against Xray-core v26.10.21:\n\n||xray-rust|Xray-core|\n|:-|:-|:-|\n|Idle memory|4.6 MiB|27.4 MiB|\n|1,000 held connections|22.7 MiB|78.6 MiB|\n|VLESS + REALITY + Vision|22.1 Gbps|19.1 Gbps|\n\nThe original motivation hasn’t changed: I want a core that works comfortably inside a mobile VPN app. There’s now considerably more you can run through it.\n\n[Core](https://github.com/aimalygin/xray-rust) · [Mobile SDK](https://github.com/aimalygin/xray-rust-mobile) · [Release notes](https://github.com/aimalygin/xray-rust/releases/tag/v0.9.0)\n\nIf you’ve tried it since the first post, I’d like to hear how it went. Configurations that don’t work and bugs you can reproduce are especially helpful.","send_replies":true,"spoiler":false,"stickied":false,"subreddit":"dumbclub","subreddit_id":"t5_3dd98","subreddit_name_prefixed":"r/dumbclub","subreddit_subscribers":11442,"subreddit_type":"public","suggested_sort":null,"thumbnail":"self","thumbnail_height":81,"thumbnail_width":140,"title":"xray-rust update: more protocols, less memory, and a lot of testing","top_awarded_type":null,"total_awards_received":0,"treatment_tags":[],"ups":12,"upvote_ratio":0.9285714285714286,"url":"https://www.reddit.com/r/dumbclub/comments/1xn1xl4/xrayrust_update_more_protocols_less_memory_and_a/","user_reports":[],"view_count":null,"visited":false,"wls":6},{"_meta":{"removal_type":"reddit","retrieved_2nd_on":1793840850,"was_deleted_later":true},"all_awardings":[],"allow_live_comments":false,"approved_at_utc":null,"approved_by":null,"archived":false,"author":"Specialist-Way1402","author_flair_background_color":null,"author_flair_css_class":null,"author_flair_richtext":[],"author_flair_template_id":null,"author_flair_text":null,"author_flair_text_color":null,"author_flair_type":"text","author_fullname":"t2_24jddgf71g","author_is_blocked":false,"author_patreon_flair":false,"author_premium":false,"awarders":[],"banned_at_utc":null,"banned_by":null,"can_gild":false,"can_mod_post":false,"category":null,"clicked":false,"content_categories":null,"contest_mode":false,"created":1793711239,"created_utc":1793711239,"discussion_type":null,"distinguished":null,"domain":"i.redd.it","downs":0,"edited":false,"gilded":0,"gildings":{},"hidden":false,"hide_score":false,"id":"1xmsgsh","is_created_from_ads_ui":false,"is_crosspostable":false,"is_meta":false,"is_original_content":false,"is_reddit_media_domain":true,"is_robot_indexable":true,"is_self":false,"is_video":false,"likes":null,"link_flair_background_color":"","link_flair_css_class":null,"link_flair_richtext":[],"link_flair_text":null,"link_flair_text_color":"dark","link_flair_type":"text","locked":false,"media":null,"media_embed":{},"media_only":false,"mod_note":null,"mod_reason_by":null,"mod_reason_title":null,"mod_reports":[],"name":"t3_1xmsgsh","no_follow":false,"num_comments":6,"num_crossposts":0,"num_reports":null,"outbound_link":{"created":null,"expiration":null,"url":"https://i.redd.it/3h1on8hfcezh1.jpeg"},"over_18":false,"permalink":"/r/dumbclub/comments/1xmsgsh/feedback_on_my_personal_anticensorship_vpn_setup/","pinned":false,"post_hint":"image","preview":{"enabled":true,"images":[{"id":"3h1on8hfcezh1","resolutions":[{"height":60,"url":"https://preview.redd.it/3h1on8hfcezh1.jpeg?width=108&auto=webp&s=3b47338c1c1023bb3a3d990ca3b6fbd15779c671","width":108},{"height":121,"url":"https://preview.redd.it/3h1on8hfcezh1.jpeg?width=216&auto=webp&s=584a4023a44607c68f5a89a233626fdf572a1a35","width":216},{"height":180,"url":"https://preview.redd.it/3h1on8hfcezh1.jpeg?width=320&auto=webp&s=986a703ff4936ec343de4d389a1be50c4360e36c","width":320},{"height":360,"url":"https://preview.redd.it/3h1on8hfcezh1.jpeg?width=640&auto=webp&s=0ca05e68fce82fbe50ef9f0074359377b7ddef14","width":640},{"height":540,"url":"https://preview.redd.it/3h1on8hfcezh1.jpeg?width=960&auto=webp&s=6d6f3f5b257f3097c07fb8a02204e872757b5be0","width":960},{"height":607,"url":"https://preview.redd.it/3h1on8hfcezh1.jpeg?width=1080&auto=webp&s=4cbef5d5e7815d9c1755e752c045233388b29a33","width":1080}],"source":{"height":941,"url":"https://preview.redd.it/3h1on8hfcezh1.jpeg?auto=webp&s=cd76ac0519e4c0a294166640f12cde58b9f59d70","width":1672},"variants":{}}]},"pwls":6,"quarantine":false,"removal_reason":null,"removed_by":null,"removed_by_category":null,"report_reasons":null,"retrieved_on":1793711248,"saved":false,"score":12,"secure_media":null,"secure_media_embed":{},"selftext":"Hi everyone, greetings from Russia’s digital gulag.\n\nI’m looking for a sanity check on my personal VPN setup, running on a VPS.\n\nnginx handles TCP/443 with SNI/ALPN-based TLS passthrough to Xray (VLESS TCP + REALITY + Vision), Caddy (Naive), or TrustTunnel. shared bgscan here about a month ago. Quite a bit has changed since then, so here's another update for anyone who missed the last post.\n\nI'm the author of bgscan. It started as a pile of one-off scripts I kept rewriting to answer the same questions: which IPs in a range are alive, which ones serve HTTP, which DNS resolvers actually forward queries, and which Xray outbounds still work.\n\nI eventually got tired of maintaining separate scripts for all of that, so I started putting them together in one terminal UI. It's written in Go, GPL-3.0, and has no telemetry.\n\n# What it does\n\nbgscan probes IPs over ICMP, TCP, HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, HTTP/3 (QUIC), DNS, Xray, and DNS tunnels.\n\nChaining is probably the part I use most. Run an ICMP sweep, send only the hosts that answered into TCP or HTTP, then write the results to CSV. The next scan can use that CSV as its input, so the target list gets smaller at every stage.\n\nPipelines can run in streaming, batch or sequential mode. You can shuffle targets, limit how many IPs each stage reads, control how many sit between stages, and stop after a certain number of successful results. That last option is useful when you only need a handful of working IPs and don't want to wait for the entire list.\n\n# What's new in 2.12.1\n\nMost of this release is about the TUI. I spent quite a bit of time fixing unnecessary rendering:\n\n* Tables, scanner panels and the footer now cache their rendered output and only rebuild when something changes.\n* Opening a dialog no longer rebuilds the screen behind it.\n* The log view batches incoming lines instead of polling once a second.\n* The footer now renders on the first frame instead of staying blank for a second.\n\nThere were also some core fixes:\n\n* A failed result-writer flush now stops the scan and reports the error instead of finishing with missing rows.\n* Closing the logger no longer races with workers still writing to the log file.\n* HTTP/2 works again in the default `h1,h2` mode.\n* Plain HTTP probes now connect to the target IP instead of the URL host.\n* SSH key authentication keeps the username, and DNSTT keeps its handshake timeout.\n* Merged results are deduplicated by key, and speedtest transfers now respect their deadlines.\n* The startup checklist shows the vendored TheFeed library version.\n\n# A bit about the internals\n\nbgscan doesn't shell out to most of these clients. They're vendored as git submodules in `third_party/`, and I maintain small forks with the changes needed to run them inside the scanner.\n\nXray is the biggest one. A scan can dial thousands of targets, and stock Xray leaves a lot of those dials waiting for their timeouts instead of closing them explicitly. On a large scan, that adds up pretty quickly.\n\nMy fork tracks every dial from TCP connect through the TLS handshake and force-closes anything still tracked when the scan ends. The dial timeout follows the Xray latency timeout from settings, there's a process-wide cap on concurrent dials, and the VLESS/VMess retry count is configurable instead of being hardcoded to five.\n\nTLS handshakes also have an 8-second limit. If a handshake fails, the raw connection gets closed instead of leaving the descriptor around.\n\nThe xhttp/splithttp and gRPC dialers got similar changes: deadlines around dial and handshake, cancellation when the caller cancels, releasing per-destination clients when their last tunnel closes, and clearing the global dialer maps when a scan ends. Otherwise, individual instances close but the pooled dialers can outlive them.\n\nVayDNS got context propagation through the transport and tunnel layers, TCP resolver support, TCP packet connections, and a small internal logger to replace logrus. Its client also backs the DNSTT path bgscan uses.\n\nFor MasterDNS, StormDNS and TheFeed, I wrote thin wrappers in `internal/core/dns/` and added a few exported hooks to the forks: a tunnel package, logger disable, default config, and a public protocol package. This lets bgscan run them in-process instead of spawning separate binaries.\n\nSlipstream is the exception. It's still running as an external binary.\n\nThe forks are here if anyone wants to look at the changes:\n\n* `third_party/xray-core`, branch `scanner-fix`\n* `third_party/vaydns`\n* `third_party/masterdns`\n* `third_party/stormdns`\n* `third_party/thefeed`\n\nAll of it is open source. Rebasing the Xray patches onto every upstream release is probably the least fun part of maintaining this project.\n\n# Supported probes\n\n* **ICMP:** Host discovery over IPv4 and IPv6.\n* **TCP:** Connection and handshake checks on any port.\n* **HTTP:** HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 over QUIC. Configurable Host header, SNI override, TLS version range, uTLS fingerprint and accepted status codes.\n* **DNS:** UDP, TCP and DoT, with record types, EDNS buffer size, accepted response codes, random subdomains, and an anti-hijack check using a fake `.invalid` domain.\n* **DNS tunnels:**\n * DNSTT, VayDNS and Slipstream with SOCKS or SSH base connections.\n * MasterDNS and StormDNS with configurable encryption and MTU discovery.\n * TheFeed over UDP, TCP or DoT.\n* **Xray:** Outbound validation plus download and upload speed tests.\n\nThere are also bundled IP lists for Cloudflare (IPv4 and IPv6), AWS, Azure, Google, Akamai, Fastly, Bunny, G-Core, Iran and public DNS servers.\n\n# Using Xray with CDN IPs\n\nYou can add outbounds directly inside the TUI. Share links are supported for VMess, VLESS, Trojan, Shadowsocks, SOCKS and Hysteria2.\n\nFor anything else Xray supports, you can import JSON or JSONC. It can be a single outbound, an array of outbounds, or a full Xray config. WireGuard is supported this way too, through JSON rather than a share link.\n\nFor each target, bgscan builds the config in memory and replaces the outbound address with the target IP. The port, SNI and Host header stay unchanged.\n\nThis is how I test CDN-fronted configs. There's a Cloudflare example outbound and IPv4/IPv6 lists in the repo, so you can point an outbound with a fixed SNI at thousands of Cloudflare IPs and see which ones actually pass traffic.\n\nSome of the settings I usually change:\n\n* Xray pre-scan: none, ICMP, TCP or HTTP.\n* Test type: connectivity only, download, upload, or both.\n* Download and upload thresholds in Kbps.\n* Latency timeout and speed-test timeout.\n* Xray workers, max concurrent dials, and dial attempts.\n* Pipeline mode, batch size, and max IPs per stage.\n* Workers, timeout and retries per probe.\n* Shuffle and IP caps.\n* DNS tunnel resolver pre-check and adaptive resolver mode.\n\nEverything is editable in the TUI inspector and saved to TOML files, which you can also edit by hand. No restart needed.\n\n# Installation\n\nThere's an installer for Linux, macOS, Termux and Windows. I wrote a small Rust installer for it, called `bgscan-installer`.\n\nIt checks the SHA-256 of the downloaded release and handles updates, clean installs and backups. It's around 2 MB and doesn't need a runtime installed.\n\nInstaller source: [https://github.com/MohsenBg/bgscan-installer](https://github.com/MohsenBg/bgscan-installer)\n\n# Links\n\n* GitHub: [https://github.com/MohsenBg/bgscan](https://github.com/MohsenBg/bgscan)\n\n# Why I built it\n\nThis is a solo project. No company behind it, no cloud service, no accounts and no telemetry.\n\nI originally built it because I needed something for resolver and Xray outbound testing. Over time it grew into something bigger, and I figured other people might find it useful too.\n\nIf you try it, let me know what breaks. Issues with your OS, bgscan version, the config you used (redact secrets), and the relevant part of `debug.log` are especially helpful.\n\nFeature requests are welcome too. It's more useful if you explain what you're trying to do rather than just suggesting a feature.","send_replies":true,"spoiler":false,"stickied":false,"subreddit":"dumbclub","subreddit_id":"t5_3dd98","subreddit_name_prefixed":"r/dumbclub","subreddit_subscribers":11294,"subreddit_type":"public","suggested_sort":null,"thumbnail":"https://external-preview.redd.it/dGgzYm9xY3gwbnloMeiFWWKypaZ3kGNsfHxqBCqiyGUZ6GuoijoeHDnykpRU.png?width=140&height=87&format=jpg&auto=webp&s=dfd9f44049a5787e4da18920abceab3ffad2987e","thumbnail_height":87,"thumbnail_width":140,"title":"bgscan v2.12.1, chain ICMP, TCP, HTTP, DNS, Xray and DNS tunnel scans from one TUI","top_awarded_type":null,"total_awards_received":0,"treatment_tags":[],"ups":24,"upvote_ratio":1,"url":"https://v.redd.it/o7epahcx0nyh1","url_overridden_by_dest":"https://v.redd.it/o7epahcx0nyh1","user_reports":[],"view_count":null,"visited":false,"wls":6},{"_meta":{"retrieved_2nd_on":1793467851},"all_awardings":[],"allow_live_comments":false,"approved_at_utc":null,"approved_by":null,"archived":false,"author":"y9felix","author_flair_background_color":null,"author_flair_css_class":null,"author_flair_richtext":[],"author_flair_template_id":null,"author_flair_text":null,"author_flair_text_color":null,"author_flair_type":"text","author_fullname":"t2_1gzprk43fp","author_is_blocked":false,"author_patreon_flair":false,"author_premium":false,"awarders":[],"banned_at_utc":null,"banned_by":null,"can_gild":false,"can_mod_post":false,"category":null,"clicked":false,"content_categories":null,"contest_mode":false,"created":1793338241,"created_utc":1793338241,"discussion_type":null,"distinguished":null,"domain":"self.dumbclub","downs":0,"edited":false,"gilded":0,"gildings":{},"hidden":false,"hide_score":false,"id":"1xj70le","is_created_from_ads_ui":false,"is_crosspostable":false,"is_meta":false,"is_original_content":false,"is_reddit_media_domain":false,"is_robot_indexable":true,"is_self":true,"is_video":false,"likes":null,"link_flair_background_color":"","link_flair_css_class":null,"link_flair_richtext":[],"link_flair_text":null,"link_flair_text_color":"dark","link_flair_type":"text","locked":false,"media":null,"media_embed":{},"media_only":false,"mod_note":null,"mod_reason_by":null,"mod_reason_title":null,"mod_reports":[],"name":"t3_1xj70le","no_follow":false,"num_comments":11,"num_crossposts":0,"num_reports":null,"over_18":false,"permalink":"/r/dumbclub/comments/1xj70le/everything_is_hackable/","pinned":false,"pwls":6,"quarantine":false,"removal_reason":null,"removed_by":null,"removed_by_category":null,"report_reasons":null,"retrieved_on":1793338256,"saved":false,"score":0,"secure_media":null,"secure_media_embed":{},"selftext":"VPN, proxies and other internet-censorship circumvention tech is as effective as ever. There is no VPN that is literally impossible to block.\n\nWhat seems more useful now is having several routing options instead of depending on one tunnel for everything:\n\n\\-switch routes when one becomes slow or blocked\n\n\\-send only selected apps through the tunnel\n\n\\-keep local services and banking apps on the direct connection\n\n\\-avoid routing unnecessary traffic through an already congested exit\n\n\\-keep a second method available instead of buying a long subscription and hoping\n\nSelf-hosting can help in some situations, but a fresh VPS address can still be detected or blocked, and maintaining it becomes another cat-and-mouse game.\n\nDPN: Beyond VPN is one alternative worth testing in this kind of setup. The decentralized routing, selectable tunnels and per-app routing are more interesting to me than simply choosing another traditional VPN server. That doesn’t mean it will be unblockable or faster on every network, but it could make sense as a fallback rather than treating one VPN as the permanent solution.\n\nFor people currently dealing with this in China, Turkey or another restricted network: are you seeing complete blocks, protocol-specific failures, or mostly speed throttling? I wanted to keep that part, but use QUIC as the transport.\n\nThat became the main idea behind Atlant.\n\nThe part I want to share is **a REALITY-inspired authentication mechanism directly over QUIC**. There’s no separate TCP connection to authenticate the client first or hand out access to the QUIC tunnel. The connection starts with QUIC.\n\nI’m calling it REALITY-inspired because this is my own construction, not Xray’s REALITY implementation transplanted into another transport. Atlant has its own protocol core, with TCP and XHTTP alongside QUIC.\n\nFor the VPN tunnel itself, you don’t need to own a domain or obtain a public TLS certificate. HTTPS for the management panel and subscription links is handled separately.\n\nThere are Android and Windows apps, a Linux client and server, and a management panel, so there’s something you can actually run rather than just a protocol proposal.\n\n[Source and downloads](https://github.com/AtlantOne/atlant-core)\n\nIt’s an early release and hasn’t had an independent security audit. I’d be interested in discussing the QUIC authentication design with people who know this area—especially which assumptions deserve a closer look.","send_replies":true,"spoiler":false,"stickied":false,"subreddit":"dumbclub","subreddit_id":"t5_3dd98","subreddit_name_prefixed":"r/dumbclub","subreddit_subscribers":11122,"subreddit_type":"public","suggested_sort":null,"thumbnail":"self","thumbnail_height":null,"thumbnail_width":null,"title":"What if the idea behind REALITY could work directly over QUIC?","top_awarded_type":null,"total_awards_received":0,"treatment_tags":[],"ups":3,"upvote_ratio":1,"url":"https://www.reddit.com/r/dumbclub/comments/1xf9acl/what_if_the_idea_behind_reality_could_work/","user_reports":[],"view_count":null,"visited":false,"wls":6},{"all_awardings":[],"allow_live_comments":false,"approved_at_utc":null,"approved_by":null,"archived":false,"author":"Find_Me_69","author_flair_background_color":null,"author_flair_richtext":[],"author_flair_template_id":null,"author_flair_text":null,"author_flair_text_color":null,"author_flair_type":"text","author_fullname":"t2_2irbtih4k3","author_is_blocked":false,"author_patreon_flair":false,"author_premium":false,"awarders":[],"banned_at_utc":null,"banned_by":null,"can_gild":false,"can_mod_post":false,"category":null,"clicked":false,"contest_mode":false,"created":1792856943,"created_utc":1792856943,"discussion_type":null,"distinguished":null,"domain":"self.dumbclub","downs":0,"edited":false,"gilded":0,"gildings":{},"hidden":false,"hide_score":false,"id":"1xec23a","is_created_from_ads_ui":false,"is_crosspostable":false,"is_meta":false,"is_reddit_media_domain":false,"is_robot_indexable":true,"is_self":true,"is_video":false,"likes":null,"link_flair_background_color":"","link_flair_richtext":[],"link_flair_text":null,"link_flair_text_color":"dark","link_flair_type":"text","locked":false,"media":null,"media_embed":{},"media_only":false,"mod_note":null,"mod_reason_by":null,"mod_reason_title":null,"mod_reports":[],"name":"t3_1xec23a","no_follow":false,"num_comments":0,"num_reports":null,"over_18":false,"permalink":"/r/dumbclub/comments/1xec23a/monthtomonth_cn2_gia_alternatives_to/","pinned":false,"preview":{"images":[{"source":{"url":"https://external-preview.redd.it/-xgjZrYZ4l9lCIGaS0BF73zCkYeAp9Xl9A-N0C4GZno.jpeg?auto=webp&s=8a0f048e0d2a534e4aeae0a617e240399061c7b9","width":1200,"height":680},"resolutions":[{"height":61,"url":"https://external-preview.redd.it/-xgjZrYZ4l9lCIGaS0BF73zCkYeAp9Xl9A-N0C4GZno.jpeg?width=108&auto=webp&s=45b2ec43d6e1cca57de3ceaef8258b366dc24f57","width":108},{"height":122,"url":"https://external-preview.redd.it/-xgjZrYZ4l9lCIGaS0BF73zCkYeAp9Xl9A-N0C4GZno.jpeg?width=216&auto=webp&s=c82d79db826f8516a99107653ea8c5daa5773785","width":216},{"height":181,"url":"https://external-preview.redd.it/-xgjZrYZ4l9lCIGaS0BF73zCkYeAp9Xl9A-N0C4GZno.jpeg?width=320&auto=webp&s=df0b1f5832473b6ba7a620927b244b5aa4260b96","width":320},{"height":272,"url":"https://external-preview.redd.it/-xgjZrYZ4l9lCIGaS0BF73zCkYeAp9Xl9A-N0C4GZno.jpeg?width=480&auto=webp&s=f6d5e5e41703911660a1518cf60a6f65a1575877","width":480},{"height":362,"url":"https://external-preview.redd.it/-xgjZrYZ4l9lCIGaS0BF73zCkYeAp9Xl9A-N0C4GZno.jpeg?width=640&auto=webp&s=29ebf6089b6328c17d46a23cba29351f52bc83a6","width":640},{"height":408,"url":"https://external-preview.redd.it/-xgjZrYZ4l9lCIGaS0BF73zCkYeAp9Xl9A-N0C4GZno.jpeg?width=720&auto=webp&s=0ad2d6dd9dd71a07ab2ed3214183988e6a40835c","width":720},{"height":544,"url":"https://external-preview.redd.it/-xgjZrYZ4l9lCIGaS0BF73zCkYeAp9Xl9A-N0C4GZno.jpeg?width=960&auto=webp&s=77dfea3fdbe078491c45d5dc0ff277a93bd03db6","width":960},{"height":612,"url":"https://external-preview.redd.it/-xgjZrYZ4l9lCIGaS0BF73zCkYeAp9Xl9A-N0C4GZno.jpeg?width=1080&auto=webp&s=15f05b91834e8666d1c30ed6bcf8e8967d44913e","width":1080}],"variants":{},"id":"-xgjZrYZ4l9lCIGaS0BF73zCkYeAp9Xl9A-N0C4GZno"}],"enabled":false},"profile_img":"https://preview.redd.it/snoovatar/avatars/2d09e55c-20f7-4d7c-a278-da74d282f9da-headshot.png?auto=webp&s=6bb8fe65889ef9e2abfe6cbae38a7b6a4b7d74d0","pwls":6,"quarantine":false,"removal_reason":null,"removed_by_category":null,"report_reasons":null,"retrieved_on":1792856960,"saved":false,"score":1,"secure_media":null,"secure_media_embed":{},"selftext":"I run a few Dockerized web apps and API backends for users in Mainland China and Southeast Asia. For the last couple of years, I've mainly been using BandwagonHost (LA DC6) alongside a couple of Vultr instances in Tokyo and Singapore.\n\n\n\nBoth have worked for me, but I've run into a couple of annoyances with the cheaper plans.\n\n\n\nThe first is routing. My Vultr instances can get pretty rough in the evening when accessing them from Mainland China, especially between 8pm and 11pm. I've seen packet loss hit 15-25% on Telecom/Unicom during those periods.\n\n\n\nDisk space is the other headache. A 20GB or 25GB disk sounds fine when you first set up a VPS, but it doesn't take long to fill up once you've got Debian 12, Docker images, Postgres and a few weeks of logs sitting on the same machine. I've had disks reach 85% usage before I even had that much running.\n\n\n\nSo I started looking around for monthly CN2 GIA (AS4809) plans with a bit more storage. Ended up trying two KVM instances from \\*\\*LuckVM\\*\\* ([luckvm.com\\] (https://www.luckvm.com)) about a month ago, both at $8.80/month. One is in Hong Kong and the other is in LA.\n\n\n\nI've been using them alongside my existing servers, so here's what I've noticed so far.\n\n\n\n\\### The plans side by side\n\n\n\n| \\*\\*Provider\\*\\* | \\*\\*Location\\*\\* | \\*\\*Price\\*\\* | \\*\\*Disk / RAM\\*\\* | \\*\\*Port & Traffic\\*\\* | \\*\\*Evening Ping / Loss to CN\\*\\* |\n\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n\n| \\*\\*BandwagonHost\\*\\* | LA (DC6 GIA-E) | \\~$16.60/mo ($49.99/qtr) | 20GB SSD / 1GB | 1Gbps+ shared (500GB cap) | \\~145ms / <0.2% loss |\n\n| \\*\\*Vultr\\*\\* | Tokyo / SG | $6–$12/mo | 32GB NVMe / 1GB | 1Gbps shared (metered) | 70–180ms / 15%+ evening loss |\n\n| \\*\\*LuckVM\\*\\* | Hong Kong (CN2 GIA) | $8.80/mo (monthly) | 70GB NVMe / 1GB | 10Mbps dedicated (unmetered) | 5–22ms (<10ms coastal) / <0.3% loss |\n\n| \\*\\*LuckVM\\*\\* | Los Angeles (CN2 GIA) | $8.80/mo (monthly) | 70GB NVMe / 1GB | 30Mbps dedicated (unmetered) | 138–166ms / 0% loss (<2ms jitter) |\n\n\n\n\\### A few things I noticed after setting them up\n\n\n\n\\*\\*The extra disk space is probably my favourite part.\\*\\*\n\n\n\nFor $8.80 a month, getting 70GB of NVMe storage is pretty nice. The HK and LA plans both split it into a 10GB system partition and a 60GB data partition. I ran a quick \\`fio\\` test and got over 3,000 MB/s.\n\n\n\nIt's not that every project needs 70GB, but I got tired of constantly checking disk usage and cleaning up Docker images just to keep a small VPS running. Having that extra space makes life a bit easier.\n\n\n\n\\*\\*Setup was straightforward, too.\\*\\*\n\n\n\nI paid with USDT, although Alipay and cards are also available. The VM was ready in about three minutes. It came with Debian 12 (bookworm), the 6.1 kernel and BBR already enabled, so I didn't need to spend time setting up the basics.\n\n\n\nThe control panel has one-click snapshots, custom ISO mounting and emergency VNC. Nothing particularly revolutionary, but the things I needed were there and worked without much hassle.\n\n\n\n\\*\\*The Hong Kong route has been good for my use case.\\*\\*\n\n\n\nThe HK node uses bidirectional AS4809 plus BGP. From Guangdong, I'm seeing ping times below 10ms. Across my Mainland China tests, it's generally around 15–20ms, with very little packet loss around 9pm.\n\n\n\nThe LA server is obviously going to have much higher latency because of the distance. I'm getting roughly 145ms on the tests I've been running, though the evening jitter has stayed below 2ms and I haven't seen packet loss in those samples.\n\n\n\nThat's been the main difference for me. I use Hong Kong when response time matters, while LA is useful for workloads that need a US location.\n\n\n\n\\### One thing to keep in mind: the bandwidth\n\n\n\nThe main trade-off with LuckVM is the port speed. Unlike BandwagonHost, where you get a much larger burstable port but also have a monthly traffic allowance, LuckVM uses a smaller dedicated port with unmetered traffic and no peak throttling.\n\n\n\nThat works fine for some workloads, but not all of them.\n\n\n\nThe Hong Kong plan has a 10Mbps port, which works out to roughly 1.2 MB/s in practice at the top end. For API requests, WooCommerce, payment webhooks or SSH connections, I care more about latency than raw throughput, so that hasn't been a big issue.\n\n\n\nI wouldn't use it to serve several gigabytes of static files directly, though. Those can sit behind Cloudflare or another CDN instead. Pulling large Docker images over a 10Mbps connection also takes a while.\n\n\n\nThe LA plan is a little different. It's the same $8.80/month, but the port is 30Mbps, or around 3.5 MB/s at the theoretical limit. That makes a noticeable difference when pulling images from Docker Hub, cloning GitHub repositories or sending backups to another location.\n\n\n\nSo far, I've found myself using the HK box for the latency-sensitive stuff and the LA one when I need a US server or a bit more transfer speed.\n\n\n\n\\*(One other thing I noticed while browsing their order page: they also have $11/month nodes in Tokyo, Seoul and Singapore, a $4.93/month 1Gbps BGP plan in Malaysia, hourly RTX 4090/A100 GPUs, and bare-metal Proxmox hosts with /24 IP blocks. I haven't tried the dedicated servers or GPUs myself, so I can't really comment on those. There's also a 24-hour refund policy for new users, subject to traffic staying under 1GB, which could be useful if you just want to spin up a node and run some MTR tests.)\\*\n\n\n\n\\### Curious what other people are using\n\n\n\nFor production websites and APIs serving users in Mainland China, would you rather have a 1Gbps metered port or a dedicated 10–30Mbps port with unmetered traffic and a CDN in front?\n\n\n\nI can see the appeal of both. The bigger port gives you room to move data around, but the smaller unmetered one is easier to work with when you don't want to worry about traffic limits. needed a NekoBox replacement that starts fast and comes up on its own at boot, and I also had a case where I needed a kill switch on Windows. So I built **proxybox**.\n\nIt runs as a Windows service with autostart, and the window is just a thin client on top. The invariant is simple: private mode on + tunnel not confirmed = the selected apps have no network. There are no intermediate states with direct access and no bypass rules.\n\n**How it works**\n\n* sing-box does the tunnelling to **your own server**. The product has no network of its own.\n* The app selection doesn't live in the sing-box config. It sits one layer below, in a user-mode WFP filter (since 0.8.0, no driver), and applies on `connect`, before any TUN.\n* Passes are issued only after a SOCKS5 probe through the tunnel succeeds. Probe fails → no passes → the selected apps stay offline.\n* Two scopes: **whitelist** (only the apps you pick, only through the tunnel; everything else is left alone) or **whole machine** (services, DNS and anything without a process go into the tunnel too).\n* The sing-box config is byte for byte the same in both scopes, so switching scope or editing the app list doesn't restart the tunnel. An open SSH session survives it.\n* DNS uses FakeIP: A records come from a local pool, AAAA comes back empty, and local names go to your router.\n\n**Import:** share links (vless://, trojan://…), sing-box JSON, subscription URLs and Clash YAML, pasted line by line or as a file. Nodes can be latency-tested.\n\n**Privacy:** no telemetry, no traffic logs. The only third party is ip-api.com for the exit country, and it's asked **through the tunnel** (it sees your server, not you), and you can turn it off. Update checks happen only when you press the button.\n\n**Honest limitations** (full list in docs/limitations.md, ordered by the cost of the mistake):\n\n* Windows 10/11 is the full product (window, service, installer). Linux has only the service and CLI so far, and **no whitelist**: only whole-machine scope.\n* In whitelist mode the DNS gap is open for `svchost.exe` as a whole, because WFP can't tell which service inside svchost asked. FakeIP covers A/AAAA, but `HTTPS`/`SVCB`/`TXT`/`PTR` queries still go to your server through the tunnel.\n* While locked, the machine accepts no inbound connections at all: no RDP, no SSH, no WSL2/Hyper-V guests over vEthernet. That's a chosen trade-off, otherwise an unselected app with an inbound rule could talk past the tunnel.\n* Any process running as your user can turn private mode off through the service pipe. It gets logged with the sender's name, but it can't be prevented.\n\nRust core and service, Tauri desktop UI, GPL-3.0. UI, service and installer speak English, Russian, Persian, Chinese, Turkish and Indonesian, but **no native speaker has read the zh/fa/tr/id translations yet**. If you can proofread one, that'd help a lot.\n\nRepo + installer: [https://github.com/Gerrux/proxybox](https://github.com/Gerrux/proxybox)\n\nBug reports from real machines are the most useful thing right now.
