A lot of the 45's that you see getting ridden were rescued from situations similar to what you are describing. I think the present owner is way too ambitious on the price for a non-running, rolling basket case, which is pretty much what you're describing. Somewhere out there is a young biker who would love to have it, but restoring a bike that far gone is a big project, and it won't be cheap. Shovelheads aren't rare. I daily drove an aircooled beetle for years and would often take it up to my college and back. That thing leaked oil regularly enough, and at least once a week I would check the fuel lines and such due to anything rattling loose with that old engine. I would also have to check valve lashings at every oil change every 3000 miles. \n\nI am just happier on older equipment despite being young myself. I just finished rebuilding a 390 Big Block FE for my Ford Thunderbird. I am not very typical, I am a financial associate at a big bank but have a long beard and always come to work in a suit with grease under my nails lol. But unfortunately when I went to look at this bike, it was way too far gone, and needs closer to a full restoration than a driving project which is what I am looking for. The bike wouldnt start, none of the lights worked, the brakes were seized and tires were rotted to the ground. Looks like it sat outside for 40 of those 45 years. So I am continuing my search, thank you for your insight though! I love how much knowledge the community has on these beautiful bikes.","can_gild":true,"can_mod_post":false,"collapsed":false,"collapsed_because_crowd_control":null,"collapsed_reason":null,"controversiality":0,"created_utc":1587822756,"distinguished":null,"edited":false,"gilded":0,"gildings":{},"id":"fojjrnj","is_submitter":false,"link_id":"t3_g6fdl0","locked":false,"no_follow":true,"parent_id":"t1_foimg0p","permalink":"/r/Harley/comments/g6fdl0/shovelhead_for_a_first_bike_for_a_bigger_guy/fojjrnj/","quarantined":false,"removal_reason":null,"retrieved_on":1594362368,"score":2,"send_replies":true,"stickied":false,"subreddit":"Harley","subreddit_id":"t5_2rbr0","subreddit_name_prefixed":"r/Harley","subreddit_type":"public","top_awarded_type":null,"total_awards_received":0,"treatment_tags":[],"name":"t1_fojjrnj","ups":2},{"all_awardings":[],"associated_award":null,"author":"Encinitas0667","author_created_utc":1548077705,"author_flair_background_color":null,"author_flair_css_class":null,"author_flair_richtext":[],"author_flair_template_id":null,"author_flair_text":null,"author_flair_text_color":null,"author_flair_type":"text","author_fullname":"t2_31q2oup5","author_patreon_flair":false,"author_premium":false,"awarders":[],"body":"The KBB list price for a 1975 FXE is $5,840. You said FLH. Is it an Electra-Glide? A 1975 Electra-Glide lists for $7,945.\n\nDuring the pre-Evo era, you kind of had to be a pretty good mechanic to run a Harley. All the old Harleys--the flatheads, the knucks, the pans and shovels--leaked oil at least a little bit. Pretty much everybody I knew back then kept a cookie sheet with some oil-sorb on it under their bike to keep oil off the garage floor. The old shovelheads are definitely not \"turn-key\" motorcycles like today. They required nearly constant maintenance, but none of us cared because turning wrenches was just part of being a Harley-riding biker. It was a point of pride that we did our own mechanic work.\n\nYoung riders today aren't used to that, and get alarmedf if there is some slight oil issue. Modern bikes don't leak oil the way the old bikes did, so even a little oil spot sets off everybody's alarms.\n\nIf you aren't a bike mechanic now, if you buy a shovelhead, you will be. They have a lot more vibration than the new bikes, which causes things to loosen up. Standard procedure is to go over your bike at least once a week, checking for loose fasteners, etc. If you aren't into that, you might be unhappy owning a shovelhead.\n\nPlenty of really big guys owned shovelheads back in the day. The biggest OEM engine Harley made was 74 cu. in. \"Big bore\" shovels usually didn't go too much above an 80 cu. in. Somebody running a 96 or 100+ would draw a crowd. They were rare, and they were mostly built in speed shops that specialized in building big engines, installing 5-speed transmissions, performance cams, open primaries, double-plug heads and so on. You could not buy specialty heads and stuff too many places.\n\n(I knew several guys that had \"74\" tattoos. A 74 was a serious engine back then, when knucks often had a 61. Today, you can buy a 131 cu. in. Screamin' Eagle crate engine straight from Harley.)\n\nI'm 6' 1\" and I rode my shovel with forward controls. Bagger-type mid-controls felt kind of cramped to me after installing forward controls, but plenty of bagger owners used them, of course.\n\nA 1975 Harley is 45 years old. I think I'd want to know quite a bit about its history before I paid $4500 for it.","can_gild":true,"can_mod_post":false,"collapsed":false,"collapsed_because_crowd_control":null,"collapsed_reason":null,"controversiality":0,"created_utc":1587790447,"distinguished":null,"edited":1587793561,"gilded":0,"gildings":{},"id":"foimg0p","is_submitter":false,"link_id":"t3_g6fdl0","locked":false,"no_follow":true,"parent_id":"t3_g6fdl0","permalink":"/r/Harley/comments/g6fdl0/shovelhead_for_a_first_bike_for_a_bigger_guy/foimg0p/","quarantined":false,"removal_reason":null,"retrieved_on":1594346458,"score":3,"send_replies":true,"stickied":false,"subreddit":"Harley","subreddit_id":"t5_2rbr0","subreddit_name_prefixed":"r/Harley","subreddit_type":"public","top_awarded_type":null,"total_awards_received":0,"treatment_tags":[],"name":"t1_foimg0p","ups":3},{"all_awardings":[],"associated_award":null,"author":"SirPandaEsq","author_created_utc":1476549159,"author_flair_background_color":null,"author_flair_css_class":null,"author_flair_richtext":[],"author_flair_template_id":null,"author_flair_text":null,"author_flair_text_color":null,"author_flair_type":"text","author_fullname":"t2_1253gs","author_patreon_flair":false,"author_premium":false,"awarders":[],"body":"Update. It is a bike of love for sure, it has its up and downs to say the least. If you are handy or know the basics of working on cars, I feel like you could take on working on the shovel, because it's basic as it comes. You will have problems, things break on them, things shake off them. If you do get it always check to make sure stuff is not lose, always have a bag of tools with you. I have had a shovel for 5 years or so, and I have broken down a hand full of times, and having a a small garage in my saddles has made it easier. It has pretty good room on it, on longer rides I feel alittle crunched up, but is a good sized bike. \nFor sure thats to much for an old shovel, if you want it talk them down for sure, if you get it you have to know that it will shake its self apart, spew oil all around, break down on you, be really hot when warmed all the way up, and just over have problems. But when she runs, she runs hard!
