At 80k miles I blew up the motor, and even with all that other stuff done, it was obvious it needed a complete frame-up build with all moving parts replaced.\n\nThe important issues-\n\nWho worked on it? Essentially \"did the mechanic follow the factory service manual, follow proper torque specs on all fasteners, use blue LocTite on fasteners, remove a part and actually replace gaskets when this or that surface began to leak, or did they just slop RTV silicone all over things, follow the factory service schedule, regressed and adjust the fork stem bearings as needed, and so on.\"\n\nWe're repairs done *correctly*?\n\nWhat work was done?\n\nWhat isn't original equipment and was it installed correctly or half-assed?\n\nWhat *regular scheduled* maintenance was done?\n\nWhen was the last time someone did things like inspecting and repacking Timken wheel bearings? When was the last time the clutch cable was *lubricated* with light oil (not WD40)? How often was the motor oil and filter changed? Primary oil? Transmission oil?\n\nMy '85 FXRP -\n\nhttps://preview.redd.it/bnyohc5cklag1.jpeg?width=3472&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=84562572818f89c259b52d4846b254760bc4f4e4","can_gild":false,"can_mod_post":false,"collapsed":false,"collapsed_because_crowd_control":null,"collapsed_reason":null,"collapsed_reason_code":null,"comment_type":null,"controversiality":0,"created":1767211916,"created_utc":1767211916,"distinguished":null,"downs":0,"edited":false,"gilded":0,"gildings":{},"id":"nwyy2xi","is_submitter":false,"likes":null,"link_id":"t3_1q0ivef","locked":false,"media_metadata":{"bnyohc5cklag1":{"e":"Image","id":"bnyohc5cklag1","m":"image/jpeg","p":[{"u":"https://preview.redd.it/bnyohc5cklag1.jpeg?width=108&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=9ee3d8f984d0f5669f73beedb8294840c6645339","x":108,"y":143},{"u":"https://preview.redd.it/bnyohc5cklag1.jpeg?width=216&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=1c8a6e0409bcb8461e5a91b459713004735a17c0","x":216,"y":287},{"u":"https://preview.redd.it/bnyohc5cklag1.jpeg?width=320&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=7d44bf15667f737f26db6067fd384ab129f5e174","x":320,"y":426},{"u":"https://preview.redd.it/bnyohc5cklag1.jpeg?width=640&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=b00f44f7d14a42442a773aeed8817e9e13603b08","x":640,"y":852},{"u":"https://preview.redd.it/bnyohc5cklag1.jpeg?width=960&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=b82919129881ce25e20f0226a93597297dbc7973","x":960,"y":1278},{"u":"https://preview.redd.it/bnyohc5cklag1.jpeg?width=1080&crop=smart&auto=webp&s=7bfe1cc8918c88fb39c77c6b1215fa87f6848b1c","x":1080,"y":1438}],"s":{"u":"https://preview.redd.it/bnyohc5cklag1.jpeg?width=3472&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=84562572818f89c259b52d4846b254760bc4f4e4","x":3472,"y":4624},"status":"valid"}},"mod_note":null,"mod_reason_by":null,"mod_reason_title":null,"mod_reports":[],"name":"t1_nwyy2xi","no_follow":true,"num_reports":null,"parent_id":"t3_1q0ivef","permalink":"/r/fxr/comments/1q0ivef/evo_mileage_well_taken_care_of_high_miles_vs_low/nwyy2xi/","removal_reason":null,"replies":"","report_reasons":null,"retrieved_on":1767211938,"saved":false,"score":6,"score_hidden":false,"send_replies":true,"stickied":false,"subreddit":"fxr","subreddit_id":"t5_35o80","subreddit_name_prefixed":"r/fxr","subreddit_type":"public","top_awarded_type":null,"total_awards_received":0,"treatment_tags":[],"unrepliable_reason":null,"ups":6,"user_reports":[]},{"_meta":{"retrieved_2nd_on":1767338499},"all_awardings":[],"approved_at_utc":null,"approved_by":null,"archived":false,"associated_award":null,"author":"bonerwakeup","author_flair_background_color":null,"author_flair_css_class":null,"author_flair_richtext":[],"author_flair_template_id":null,"author_flair_text":null,"author_flair_text_color":null,"author_flair_type":"text","author_fullname":"t2_py7ni","author_is_blocked":false,"author_patreon_flair":false,"author_premium":false,"awarders":[],"banned_at_utc":null,"banned_by":null,"body":"“Who worked on it” is def the biggest variable, in my opinion. Well if I’m buying a used evo in 2025 I’d expect that at some point between it was produced and now…sure it was rebuilt. But no receipts means BULLSHIT! In some cases you cannot reverse damage even with a rebuild.\n\nI'd be concerned with too low of miles because that meant it did a lot of siting.  Sitting is bad, things dry out, crack, oxidize, or worse yet; settle and develope flat spots.  \n\n[A rebuild is as involved as you need it to be.](https://imgur.com/a/EDaxexy) you simply won't know untill you start the tear down.  Picked that 98 up got into it, found LOTS of issues all of which needed to be corrected; was either fix it or have a huge expensive pile of metal.  \n\nBe wary of the [INA years](https://imgur.com/a/EDaxexy), in fact just replace the cam bearing.  If you want to cheap out and not do a cam bearing listen for a sound like a bird chirping, it'll hard to tell where its coming from and will drive you crazy.  If you hear it STOP driving the bike and do not turn it back on till you replace the cam bearing.\n\nThe evo is pretty garage mechanic friendly; looser tolerances then a twinky, revo or M8, to allow a generic rebuild but tight enough it won't piss oil all over itself.  The exception is a bottom breather.  I'd look for a late model evo that has a top breather.  The bottom isn't bad but tends to puke oil into the air cleaner if it sat for any appreciable amount of time with a worn check valve (Google fxr wet sumping)","can_gild":false,"can_mod_post":false,"collapsed":false,"collapsed_because_crowd_control":null,"collapsed_reason":null,"collapsed_reason_code":null,"comment_type":null,"controversiality":0,"created":1767204215,"created_utc":1767204215,"distinguished":null,"downs":0,"edited":false,"gilded":0,"gildings":{},"id":"nwy97uv","is_submitter":false,"likes":null,"link_id":"t3_1q0ivef","locked":false,"mod_note":null,"mod_reason_by":null,"mod_reason_title":null,"mod_reports":[],"name":"t1_nwy97uv","no_follow":true,"num_reports":null,"parent_id":"t3_1q0ivef","permalink":"/r/fxr/comments/1q0ivef/evo_mileage_well_taken_care_of_high_miles_vs_low/nwy97uv/","removal_reason":null,"replies":"","report_reasons":null,"retrieved_on":1767204240,"saved":false,"score":1,"score_hidden":false,"send_replies":true,"stickied":false,"subreddit":"fxr","subreddit_id":"t5_35o80","subreddit_name_prefixed":"r/fxr","subreddit_type":"public","top_awarded_type":null,"total_awards_received":0,"treatment_tags":[],"unrepliable_reason":null,"ups":1,"user_reports":[]}]}
