If you’re going for a hotrod, big inch motor, you’ll want to go with a newer model year for the more robust drivetrain. If you aren’t going crazy, the older models are fine. \n\nThe tapered shaft on the tranny was used all through the knuckle, pan and shovel era and they work great, they just don’t like ~80-90hp+ because they weren’t designed for it. I have a 1988 with the tapered shaft transmission, running a well tuned 96” making good HP and the transmission has held up for almost a decade. I have cracked my inner clutch hub once after a super hard launch and hard shift into second. Granted I’m running a BDL primary belt and clutch.  I would say buy it if you can get a decent deal. It is all able for modification if you want. But if you can find a 92’ or newer that is in your budget that’s always good too. If you’re gonna beat on it, find a 90 and up w/ splined clutch. I could never get my tapered shaft to hold. Installed 3 new tapered shafts + rivera hubs and on the last 2 had those machined (and the clutch hub) for double keys. The 3rd one held after having special keys machined from a super strong alloy. It was almost 30 years old and definitely needed to be gone throughout, and I never liked the 35mm forks and brakes.\n\nBecause I'd been working on older Harleys for 30 years at that point and owned all the tools, service manuals, and most importantly knowledge, I got it reliable, but over the last dozen years I've switched to the 39mm forks and once I blew up the motor, I just swapped in a hot rod 107\" Evo motor and later transmission/primary/clutch/starter/etc.\n\nJust did a complete frame-up build and even sourcing everything \"like new\"- including the motor and tranny- and doing ALL the work (including paint) myself, I still ended up spending another $8k on this build. Was always told the same as the other comment said “that trans is shitty, the clutch is shitty, the forks are shitty,” All those things being compared to the newer models from 1987 and newer. I ride my 85 from Florida to South Dakota. Never really had many issues other than little things like coil wire rubbing off from vibration. I don’t ride my bikes super hard so never really saw all those “bad things.” it did obvious leak from the base gasket and rocker box but that’s obviously also normal for an old evo. Motor ran great for those 4,000 miles to sturgis and back. I have a 92 and I love it. I heard the 94 has a better primary but I’m not sure. I’d kill for one of the CVOs from 99-2000. I bought the 85 first and the 93 a few years later.\n\nThe 85 was converted to 90's era parts as quickly as I could afford it at the time I bought it, and at this point doesnt have many original parts from when it rolled off the assembly line. New to the scene and I’m learning it’s easy to get overwhelmed with the ins and outs of these models.  The way I look at it half the fun of these bikes is modifying to your own personal taste and riding style.  \nThe earlier trans has a key way output shaft instead of the later splined style.  I’ve heard people have run into problems with throwing big horsepower in front of them and breaking the clutch basket.  The clutch is also the earlier style shovelhead type throw out bearing which is prone to breaking.  I’ve heard that any later style gear set (think something like 2002 was the change over) can be adapted to fit into the case.  Then the starter setup/ primary is a whole other issue.  Later whole touring trans/ swingarms can also be adapted to fit.  \n\n35mm shocks on the earlier ones aren’t terrible, but compared to today’s standards they are dated.  That being said there is again tons of options and opportunities for upgrade.  \n\nAll of these issues are common issues with 30-40 year old plus bikes regardless of manufacturer and model.  If you want something to hop on and ride, I’d say buy something new or have another one in the stable ready to go.   For me I actually enjoy spending time in the garage, tracking down parts, doing the research and experiencing the process/improvements.
