are quite a few misconceptions in your post - we are happy to help address them.\n\nRegarding the VPN: \n\n* Opera’s free browser VPN uses highly secure AES-256 encryption, so your browser traffic is protected and cannot be monitored by anyone. Our VPN has been [audited for its security by Cure53](https://blogs.opera.com/security/2022/03/operas-free-browser-vpn-completes-independent-security-audit-by-cure53/), a trusted cybersecurity company based in Berlin, Germany. \n* Opera’s free browser VPN is a no-log service, which means it does not collect nor store any data about your browser activity, originating network address, or identity, ensuring your privacy. Our no-log policy has been [independently audited by Deloitte](https://blogs.opera.com/security/2024/09/opera-free-browser-vpn-no-log-audit-deloitte/), which has audited several commercial VPNs. \n\nYou can find more information about our VPN services [here](https://blogs.opera.com/security/2023/02/opera-vpn-is-safe/). \n\nOpera is still, and always has been, a [Norwegian company](https://www.opera.com/about). Our headquarters are in Oslo, Norway, and our products and services are developed in our hubs in Wroclaw, Poland and in Linköping and Gothenburg, Sweden. As a company registered in Norway, we are governed by the laws of Norway and the European Union, which Norway adopts as a member of the EEA. \n\nThe most important part of these laws in our case is the GDPR - the EU's General Data Protection Regulation. It is the most robust data protection framework in the world, and it sets out very strict terms and requirements for companies that process user data - such companies must clearly state what kind of user they collect and process, for which purpose, how long they keep such data, and of course, how they protect such data. In our case, you can find this information in our [Privacy Statement](https://www.opera.com/legal/privacy).\n\nOpera is also a public company, listed on the NASDAQ stock exchange in New York. As a public company, we have thousands of shareholders all over the world. The largest shareholder is a Chinese company called Kunlun Tech, listed on the Shenzhen stock exchange. However, as a shareholder, it is not part of the Opera Group of companies, and it does not have access to Opera data - nor does any other shareholder of Opera. Also as a public company, Opera must disclose its activities in detail every quarter, according to SEC regulations. Those disclosures are available to the public, and they outline all of Opera's financial and business activities. So in fact, Opera has to be more transparent than most private software companies.\n\nWe have responded to such allegations before in detail, and we encourage you to read [our response](https://blogs.opera.com/security/2023/07/debunking-spyware-misinformation) carefully. There is a lot of misinformation online about Opera, and none of it comes from credible sources. Opera's consumer browser business was sold for $600 million to a Chinese consortium, which controls a lot of the shares. Since the parent entity is Chinese, national security and data-sharing laws in China could theoretically compel access to user telemetry or operational control. There are many who don't prefer opera to avoid telemetry or specific geopolitical corporate ties, combined with historical business practices.
