By 8PM, the commuter rush has definitely died down, but there are still \"normal\" people on the light rail and walking around Columbia City and it feels safe (to me). I see the most visible signs of crime and/or poverty along MLK, and it gets progressively better as you head towards and east of Rainier Ave. PCC is the easiest choice for groceries, but it is definitely expensive, although honestly, if you aren't from Seattle, get ready for sticker shock when it comes time to shop for groceries. Other grocery stores are an easy few stops away on the 7 bus line. Columbia City is a great neighborhood and has a small town feel in the City.
